Electroacupuncture
Electroacupuncture is a modern variation of acupuncture. It uses electricity to enhance the benefits of this traditional therapeutic treatment
Treatments
Electroacupuncture
Like traditional acupuncture, electroacupuncture uses needles placed in specific points in the body. Then, a small electrode is attached to the needles. A small amount of electricity runs through the electrode and gives a slight vibration or soft hum during treatment.
Electroacupuncture blocks pain by activating a variety of bioactive chemicals in the body.
Common Conditions we can Treat
Electroacupuncture
Body ‘Traditional’ Electroacupuncture when the needles are placed in acupuncture point (mapped to 14 main meridians or channels). This can help with many different conditions, such as sciatica pain, chronic pain, knee pain, back pain etc.
We are also able to offer 3 specialist electroacupuncture treatments:
Percutaneous Electrical Nerve stimulation (PENS) or Percutaneous Neuromodulation Therapy (PNT)
or is a therapy that combines the features of acupuncture and TENS to reduce pain and restore
function.
PNT is the electrical stimulation of a peripheral nerve (nerve trunk points). This treatment aims to
stimulate the nerve with low- to medium-frequency electric current and aims to alter nerve activity,
ease central sensitization and calm hyperexcitable and irritable nerves.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) or Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is
transcutaneous or percutaneous application of electrical currents to activate muscle contractions
using surface electrodes or needles attached to the neuromuscular stimulator device.
NMES is the electrical stimulation of a muscle (motor point) to increase muscle strength, prevent or
retard disuse atrophy, relax muscle spasms, increase joint mobility, and promote voluntary control
of muscles in members who have lost muscle function due to surgery, neurological injury, or a
disabling condition.
Percutaneous Electrical Nerve stimulation (PENS) & Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) are often used together.
Electroacupuncture may help with conditions like:
Neurological Diseases
Chronic Pain
Muscle related Pain
Sciatica Pain
Sensation of numbness (pins and needles)
Pain in general
There are a few risks of electroacupuncture, however if you have a history of any of the following conditions should avoid electroacupuncture:
Seizures
Epilepsy
Pacemaker
Possibly Pregnancy
(Talk with your doctor if you’re pregnant and thinking about electroacupuncture. They’ll help you decide if it’s safe for you and your baby)
